The Not-My-Style List, version 2

The Not-My-Style List: Determine your personal style by writing out what you DON'T like to help you figure out what you DO like — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

On this day four years ago, I shared a “Not-My-Style” List, inspired by a blog post written by Anuschka Rees, author of The Curated Closet. When it comes to your personal style (clothes or home decor), if you’re having a hard time pinpointing exactly what it is you do like, try listing out all of the trends or specific things (colors, styles, etc.) that you don’t like! It’s usually much easier for me to think of all of the things I don’t like as opposed to all of the things I do like.

My list in 2016 had 45 items on it, and I was amused as I read through it recently and realized that I now wear some of the things that I didn’t think were my style back then! Here’s a list of things from my original Not-My-Style List from 2016 that I now own and have worn (see examples below) or that I would wear now (with some caveats).

THE ITEMS THAT ARE NOW MY STYLE

  • Culottes — I do not own an exact pair of culottes, but I do own a pair of swingy wide leg pants that I love (and I own two other pairs of wide leg pants!).

  • Extreme crop tops — I’m not exactly sure what I meant by “extreme” (lol, what was the style in 2016? maybe I meant bra tops…), but I’m not opposed to crop tops when paired with high-rise bottoms. Kinda funny saying that now that I’m in my 30s!

  • Large peasant sleeves — Again, I’m not really sure what I meant by “large” here, lol. I’m still not really a fan of peasant tops in general, but I now own an airy top with wide sleeves and don’t hate it on me.

  • Most bohemian elements (i.e. long and flow-y tops/dresses) — I’m not sure that I’d wear boho garments in every day life, but I do love my caftan for beach vacations. And sometimes I dream about buying boho dresses and shooting outfits in the desert with floppy hats, haha.

  • Tassels — I now own a straw bag with little tassels! I purchased it prior to our family trip to Florida in summer 2017.

  • Tunics — I’m warming up to the idea of wearing tunics more now that I’m working from home and wearing my fair share of leggings.

  • Dropped shoulders (especially if the garment is striped) — I still try to avoid dropped shoulders as much as possible, but I do have a couple of dropped shoulder sweaters I love.

  • Midi skirts — HA! I started working a year after my first Not-My-Style List was published, gave in and tried a midi skirt, and haven’t turned back. I now own five that could be considered midi!

  • Mules — I ordered a pair of flat mules a couple of years ago that didn’t work out (too stiff), and then I received a pair as part of a collaboration with Earth Shoes this past spring and LOVE them!

  • Jumpsuits/rompers — I don’t own a jumpsuit or romper, but I’m not totally opposed to them. I’ve been known to wear faux rompers! I just don’t like how impractical they are for (regular, non-pandemic) life.

THE NOT-MY-STYLE LIST, VERSION 2

The other 35 things on my first Not-My-Style List are included, plus:

  • Low rise jeans/pants (I’m converted to high rise, but I do still own a couple of pairs of jeans and pants that have low- to mid-rises and am on the lookout for replacements.)

  • Smocking

  • Square-toed shoes

  • Any vests other than puffer

  • Polos (too many flashbacks to school dress codes)

  • Slip dresses

  • The “Fashion Nova aesthetic”/anything Kardashian-esque

  • Low/deep v-necks

  • Slingback-style heels and flats

  • Tops with padded shoulders or puff sleeves (anything that makes the shoulders look bigger…mine are already broad enough as it is haha)

Your turn! 🤗 What’s on your Not-My-Style List? Does anything overlap with my list? Are there things you didn’t like in years past that you like and/or wear now?
