Recent beauty re-buys and new buys from Sephora — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

Hello from your resident non-beauty-guru! I like to think that I don’t spend a ton of time, money, or effort on how I look…and then I see the email from Sephora telling me I renewed my VIB status for 2020. Ha! I still don’t spend a whole lot of time on my day-to-day beauty/skincare routine. I have a bunch of tried-and-true favorites that I will probably use until they are discontinued (let’s hope that never happens), and I have a pretty simple everyday look. Here are some of my recent beauty-related re-buys and a few new items I wanted to try! Have you tried any good beauty products recently?!

RE-BUYS

Farmacy Green Clean makeup removing cleansing balm / I use this in the shower to take off my makeup prior to washing my face. I find that I need to use a decent amount to remove my stubborn mascara (even though it’s not waterproof mascara, it’s so hard to remove!) but I still think it’s worth the price as it doesn’t require vigorously rubbing my eyes to remove it!

Anastasia Beverly Hills clear brow gel / A holy grail product! I have thick, unruly eyebrows, and I truly don’t know how I lived before discovering brow gel. I have repurchased this brow gel countless times and I think I have two backups waiting for when my current gel runs out (probably soon). Love it!

Dior Lip Glow in pink / This is my go-to lip product, which you probably noticed because I wear it in 90% of my outfit shoots. I love, love the pink color and how it feels on my lips. I actually just used up one of these! I like to have two because I’m worried I might misplace one…plus I can keep them in separate bags! (I also just learned that it’s no longer called the Dior ‘Addict’ Lip Glow…ha!)

NEW BUYS

REN ClearCalm non-drying acne treatment gel / Ever since getting my IUD two and a half years ago, I’ve been dealing with minor breakouts on my face and back, especially around my period. (So fun!) I’ve been trying various acne creams with not much success…but it’s possible that my standards are too high. I’m giving this gel a try after reading the great reviews. Fingers crossed it helps!

Tarte Tarteguard mineral powder sunscreen / I’ve written before about the Peter Thomas Roth mineral powder sunscreen, which I loved, but it has since exploded in my makeup bag… So, I’ve been looking to try something else. The Tarte powder sunscreen got better reviews so I have high hopes!

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r instant retouch concealer in 120 / I’ve used the popular NARS Radiant creamy concealer for years but heard great things about Fenty Beauty so decided to give that concealer a try, especially because it’s cruelty-free. I don’t think it blends into my skin as well as the NARS concealer, so I’m not sure yet if I’d repurchase, but it does seem like I picked the correct shade on the first try which is nice. ;) I’m not sure if my skin is too oily or too dry when I apply it but it takes some time to work it into my skin all the way.

Rainbow dress + Boise Boba at the Saturday market — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

I recently rediscovered my love of boba thanks to the boba trend that’s seemingly taken over Boise. It honestly seems like a new boba place opens every week! I tried a peach and strawberry smoothie with boba from Boise Boba the last time I was downtown for the Saturday farmers market and OMG. It’s my new favorite drink! I’m already planning to get another one this weekend. Are you a boba fan? What kind of drink do you like with boba?

P.S. My rainbow-striped dress from Madewell is now on sale (+ an extra 30% off!) or it’s also available from Nordstrom (who may price match if you ask!).

Korri and I were in Minneapolis last weekend to visit his parents and go to the Vikings preseason football game against the Seahawks (my boyfriend is a huge Seahawks fan; we went to the opening home game in Seattle last year!). Unfortunately, the Vikings won the game, but it didn’t matter since it was only a preseason game. ;) The U.S. Bank Stadium is a great stadium as far as professional football stadiums go. We saw Taylor Swift there almost a year ago so it was fun to be back!

Besides the game, we also stopped at the Mall of America, of course. (I made a return at Nordstrom and picked up this belt bag and another striped shirt from Madewell—both on sale.) We checked out the aircraft viewing area at the airport—so fun if you’re an aviation geek like I am—and grabbed some food at the Sandcastle restaurant at Lake Nokomis. We also rode the train to Minnehaha Park to check out the falls. You’d have no idea the falls were there! They’re hidden down in the park. It’s an absolutely gorgeous area. There were lots of people out enjoying the beautiful weather. We really got lucky with the weather with high 70s/low 80s and relatively low humidity by Minnesota standards. We did have storms one night, so Korri and I got to enjoy a nice lightning show.

Ice cream and wine flight at The STIL, Boise, Idaho — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

I met up with a couple of girlfriends a couple of weeks ago to catch up on life at one of my favorite local spots, The STIL (short for the “sweetest things in life”), known for their fun flavors and alcohol-infused ice creams. The STIL features unique blends of ice cream, including varieties that are vegan and/or gluten-free. One of my favorite flavors is strawberry rosé, but this get together introduced my brand new favorite (non-alcoholic) flavor to me: almond creme, Oreo bits, and chunks of waffle cone. OMG, it is heaven! I’ve been craving that flavor basically nonstop since then.

We ordered an ice cream and wine flight to share (beer flights are also available) and got to pick the flavors of the ice cream and wine that we wanted. It was actually surprisingly tasty to pair the ice cream with wine! Korri and I go to The STIL often for a quick sweet treat (I got him hooked on the heavenly almond creme flavor) and I want to take him to get a flight when we have the time…hopefully sometime soon before summer is over!

Solstice at the Spiral Jetty

Korri and I spent our summer solstice meandering through southern Idaho and northern Utah on our way to Salt Lake City for the weekend. Our last stop of the day was to the Spiral Jetty, an earthwork sculpture created by Robert Smithson located on a remote northern shore of the Great Salt Lake. This famous piece of “land art” consists of over 6,000 tons of basalt rock, salt, and sand found at the site. It’s 15' wide and juts 1500’ into the lake. In years past, the Spiral Jetty has been completely covered by the lake, but in recent years, drought has exposed the jetty. You have to take a nearly 16-mile dirt road to get there. Let’s just say that I’m very glad my car held up!

I lived in Utah for a few years for grad school and never made it out to see the jetty, so I’m very happy we finally made it! As luck would have it, we visited on one of the coldest days so far this summer. Gotta love when the summer solstice is chillier than the days around it! ;) It was about 60°F, which was chilly but not terrible, but the wind over the lake made it feel ten times colder…it was blowing at 20-30 mph! I picked an outfit that would look fine in the wind, but I wasn’t anticipating it to be that windy. I probably (definitely) flashed the other folks there…

I actually ended up wearing this outfit all day. I don’t normally travel in skirts, but this one is flexible around the midsection, soft, and so comfortable. I topped it with my ribbed crop tee; the long-sleeves added much-needed warmth. I added the sandals for ease and knowing that the jetty would have sand, and sandals fit the “scene” the best in my opinion. I did almost slip/trip a couple of times walking down to the jetty, though, haha. I don’t wear sandals while driving, though. When I drive long distances, I wear secure shoes, like sneakers or my old Toms, because I like having the stability.

We had so much fun taking the scenic route for once! It was way better than sitting behind a computer working all day. How did you spend your summer solstice?
