My 2023 Closet Inventory + Style Stats

It’s (past) time to share my 2023 closet inventory! I had planned to share this last month to coincide with my Wear Your Closet Challenge, but I couldn’t get my act together to tidy up my closet and shoot photos. It sort of works out to share it now because there are a few items that I pulled from my closet to part with since completing the WYCC.

Last year, I shared an easy step-by-step guide on how to inventory your closet. I highly recommend reading that post if you’ve never completed a closet inventory! I find it very enlightening to annually review where my closet is at in terms of what I own. Taking an inventory ensures that you know exactly what’s in your closet, and it’ll help you be more intentional when adding new pieces. I use Stylebook to inventory my closet and track what I wear every day.

I’m currently up to 236 items, 14 fewer than my 2022 inventory (258 when counting loungewear and activewear). This count doesn't include some utilitarian coats and shoes, sleepwear, most workout clothes, and anything I currently have listed on Poshmark (or that will be listed soon). It also doesn’t include jewelry, bags, and other accessories because I don’t tend to spend a lot in those categories. Right now, I have 12 (18) pairs of earrings, 4 (6) necklaces, 8 (10) scarves, 17 (16) hats, and 16 (15) bags. The numbers in parentheses were from my 2022 inventory; every category changed a small amount.

Compared to the previous inventory, I decreased my number of tops (mainly tees and button-up shirts), bottoms, and dresses (by half!). I also added a couple of pairs of shoes. Overall, my outerwear and activewear/loungewear numbers stayed pretty steady. I got rid of a few leggings and added some more comfy pants, haha. Thank goodness I am back working a hybrid schedule! Dresses took the biggest hit; I don’t fit into a lot of them anymore (or I just don’t wear them as much anymore). Would you believe me if I told you that I used to own 30 dresses?!

Stylebook Style Stats

As always, I love looking at my style stats from the Stylebook closet app! I took screenshots of what I’ve worn the most over the past year (left image below) and the items with the best cost per wear (CPW) over the past year (right image below). Of note, a couple of new (2022) additions to my wardrobe made the list of most worn items: the Madewell slim demi-boot jeans (second row; reviewed here) and Quince baby alpaca-wool crew (last row; reviewed here).

I also like looking at the items with the best CPW over the past year (above right). This stat doesn’t take into consideration every item I own, because once an item hits $1 CPW over all time, I remove the price so it no longer appears in this list (and I make a note on the item with how much it cost; once I decide to part with an item, I recalculate the CPW before removing it again and sticking it in the notes).

I like watching the CPW drop to $1 since that's always my target when I buy a new item, and removing the prices of the items with extremely low CPWs makes it easier for me to see at a glance which items are close to hitting that $1 mark. I think for this stat, the CPW over all time is more interesting than over a shorter range of time; however, it’s nice to see some 2022 wardrobe additions make this list (Zella joggers, top row; olive green baseball cap, second row; and Target graphic tee, last row).
