Wintery Hike in the Mountains Near Boise

Cozy winter hike outfit with Zella restore legging — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

Over the weekend, we escaped the city for a short but relatively arduous hike in the mountains east of Boise. Even though it’s starting to feel more like spring (our high temperature was in the upper 60s last Friday!), and the snow is melting fairly quickly in the mountains, we found remnants of winter with a bit of snow still on the north-facing slopes along with a brisk evening wind. Brr!

How pretty is that sunset though?! It was a gorgeous evening for a hike, and the lighting was absolutely PERFECT. I didn’t lug the DSLR out with us so I took the opportunity to test my new iPhone 11 camera, specifically the portrait mode. It’s actually quite impressive! I still think the DSLR photo quality is a touch better but the iPhone works great in a pinch (and I much prefer the camera on my 11 to Korri’s 11 pro max; his does funky things with the shadows and colors).

We hiked on the Cervidae Peak trail, which is accessible near the Lucky Peak marina along the Lucky Peak reservoir east of Boise. With it still being winter, you can really tell how low the water level in the reservoir can get. Kinda blows my mind to think about the fact that soon enough, it’ll be full to normal levels with no sand visible like it is now! (At least, hopefully we have the snowpack to fill it!) Have you ever been to the bottom of a reservoir when the levels are low? I’m not sure I have and now I’m curious! I wonder if you could find missing sunglasses, hats, keys, phones, etc. haha.

Because it wasn’t too cold when we set out to hike (I think the temperature was around 50°F), I wore one of my wubby pullovers over a thin HEATTECH tee from Uniqlo; that combination kept me plenty warm with no need for a coat, and I was actually sweating by the time we got to our stopping point. I also wore the Zella restore soft lounge longline bra that matches my leggings under the tee. By the end of our hike, though, the sun had set and the wind was starting to pick up and I was freezing!

I don’t current have a great option for hiking shoes/boots, so I typically reach for my wool sneakers from Earth because they can handle a little bit of dirt. They are not made for being active, though, so before I destroy them I’m on the lookout for something more appropriate for hikes! Please let me know if you have any favorite brands/styles! I’ve heard mixed things about hiking boots lately. It seems like more and more people are turning towards hiking sneakers in lieu of boots, which have a tendency to pinch or rub on ankles. I’d certainly like to avoid all that so I’m struggling figuring out what to buy!

Oh, and: I found my missing sunglasses! I had misplaced these sunglasses nearly a month ago and recently found them in a random pile of things. At least I found them before I purchased a new pair!
