Mid-rise Knit Shorts: A WFH Summer Closet Hero

Two ways to wear Target mid-rise knit shorts for working from home / work from home outfit inspiration / summer work from home outfit ideas — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

It’s the end of August, and I just recently found the item that I WISH I had had all summer: mid-rise knit shorts from Target (from their in-house All in Motion line). If you follow me on Instagram and watched my stories from last week, you already know about these shorts and the fact that I’m so annoyed I didn’t learn about or find them sooner! (Did other bloggers share them and I missed it?!) I do apologize for sharing them so late in the season. I love them so much I wanted to share them anyway!

I now own these knit shorts in all four colors: grey, mulberry, navy, and black. Mulberry was the first color I purchased, and then I immediately went back to grab the other colors before they sold out (and before summer was over completely). I do think their stock is relatively fluid so if you want them but your size is gone, keep checking back! Up until this point, I had been alternating between my two pairs of bike shorts, leggings (if my house didn’t feel like an oven), and some old pairs of lounge shorts I’ve had since I was a kid (lol). These shorts are EXACTLY what I didn’t even know I had been looking for all this time! I’m calling them my official work from home summer closet hero.

In this post, I’m sharing two ways I’d wear these knit shorts to work from home! They’re the perfect everyday short for any activity, though; they’re great for lounging around the house after work or on the weekends, running quick errands (and leaving the house in general because the inseam isn’t too short!), working out, sleeping…the list is endless. I took size XS because the reviews suggested they ran true to size to slightly large, and the fit is a little loose on my waist, but I’d consider it a perfect fit because it can be easily adjusted with the drawstring if needed!

(Side note: I think those Instagram stories were the first time I did proper “influencer” stories with video and my voice…if you watched my awkward attempt at doing that and are still hanging around, thank you! LOL. Video is sooo not my thing. 🙈)

ZOOM MEETINGS GALORE

I feel very fortunate in that my work computer is a desktop and I do NOT have a webcam, so I am never on video when I have Zoom meetings. On the other hand, I do have daily meetings over FaceTime…so I need to look somewhat presentable. If I ever needed to “dress up” while working from home, this is the type of outfit I’d wear: stretchy blazer + interesting top + knit shorts + statement earrings. It’s all about what you wear on the top half. When I walked in to shoot this outfit, Korri said, “You’re wearing those shorts?” Why yes, yes I am. This is peak WFH style, after all!

Even though the juxtaposition may be jarring, it’s genius. It’s the epitome of business casual! To make this even more casual, throw on a sweater blazer instead of a ponte knit blazer like this (though this blazer is not stuffy at all; nothing stuffy is allowed to be worn in this house). The earrings could also be swapped for a necklace and worn with a simpler top.

CASUAL FRIDAY EVERYDAY

And now for the outfit you’d find me in 4-5 days a workweek and sometimes even on the weekends: a comfy sweatshirt layered over a tank top (just in case it gets too warm for the sweatshirt) + knit shorts + baseball cap because styling my hair is so 2019. 😉 This is essentially my summer 2020 uniform; it’s easy and doesn’t require me to think too hard when I get dressed in the mornings. Win/win!

For something a little more exciting that my usual WFH looks that don’t make it to the blog, I decided to put together a monochrome look featuring my new Aliya Wanek sweatshirt. The top half of me is pink, and the bottom is burgundy (or mulberry, if we’re going with the exact color of the shorts)! Pink and burgundy has been a favorite color combination of mine for years (it has been previously seen in outfits here and here).

Another favorite casual WFH outfit variation: cardigan + tee or tank + shorts. And if you’re planning a mid-day or end-of-work-day workout? Try a cardigan + sports bra + shorts.
