5 Years Later: Winter 10x10

Last year, I started doing the 5 years later outfit challenge: I picked out an outfit I first wore and blogged back in 2016 and recreated it using the same (or very similar) items. I had so much fun that I decided to keep it going for 2022, so now I’m recreating outfits I wore back in 2017! (Wow, I can’t believe 2017 was 5 years ago already…that was the year I finished my PhD!)

My goals with this series are to put together updated versions of some of my favorite past outfits, see how much my style has changed over the years (if at all), highlight the items that are still in my closet five or more years later, determine if it’s time to pass on some of my older items, inspire you to evaluate the longevity in your own wardrobe, and most importantly, remind you (and myself) that it’s cool to rewear your favorite outfits/items!

Let’s dive into the FIRST 5 years later outfit of 2022!

WINTER 10X10 — 2022 vs. 2017

Selecting this month’s look was a little difficult because in January 2017, I did my first 10x10 wardrobe challenge (chose only 10 items to remix for 10 days), so all of the outfits were relatively simple/boring compared to “regular” outfits I blogged. I asked for your help on Instagram and three of the four outfits got the exact same number of votes, haha! I ended up selecting this outfit because I didn’t realize my ivory cardigan was dirty, and it’s kind of a bitch to clean. Oh well. In 2017, I wore an H&M scarf, Everlane sweater, Madewell jeans, and Sam Edelman boots. I still own everything except for the jeans, but this time I only included one of these items in the new look for 2022!

At first, I didn’t want to recreate this outfit because this same scarf was featured in my first 5 years later outfit in January 2021. But hey, I still own the scarf—now over six years later! It seems like blanket scarves are making a resurgence…but mostly in the form of shawls/capes? I feel like those have been in for a couple of years so I am probably off on my scarf trends. I don’t see scarves being worn like I wore this scarf in 2017 (see right photo above; how the heck did I get it to look like that?!).

I love this old blanket scarf from H&M so much because it really is blanket-sized, and it’s quite warm! I decided to mix it up for this outfit and wear it like a shawl over my arms, and I didn’t totally freeze without a coat like I was expecting I would. I will say that when I put together this outfit at home, I had the scarf draped perfectly, and then I messed it up somehow when we went out to shoot and I’m not thrilled with how it looks in these photos. Oh well.

Even though I still own the majority of the items from the original outfit, I decided to mix things up and put a 2022 twist on it! My sweater, jeans, and boots are all different, and I added ear muffs—mostly because it was cold AF and partially because the outfit felt unfinished without something else (and I didn’t want to wear a coat haha).

The sweater I wore in 2017 is a thin, lightweight, slim-fitting sweater, which worked great with the giant blanket scarf even if the proportions were just a little off. This time, I wore my other black sweater: a boxy, cropped cashmere sweater! I love the added dimension of the sweater and how it looks paired with high-rise jeans.

I no longer own the Madewell skinny jeans I wore in my Winter 10x10, and even though I do own a couple of similar pairs of skinny jeans, I opted instead for my new pair of Madewell curvy Cali demi-boot jeans! Apparently skinny jeans are no longer “cool” 5 years later, so I figured I should wear a different denim silhouette for the 2022 outfit. The fit overall isn’t that different from skinny jeans save for that small flare at the bottom, and I like them because they don’t feel like too much of a departure from my usual. I won’t wear full-on 70s flares, and these are a happy medium.

I do still own and love my Sam Edelman Petty ankle boots (remember when those boots were EVERYWHERE?!), but they’re definitely starting to look a little scuffed up. I’m still loving my Marc Fisher chelsea boots and opted for those instead—the shiny leather adds some additional interest. I really went all in with the different shapes and textures in this outfit!

Since these outfits are pretty different, which one do you prefer: the 2017 original or the 2022 remix?
