My Best Tips for Tackling Holiday Sale Season (+ the BFCM Sales I'm Shopping)

It's holiday sale season…and if you're like me, seeing all of the sales at once makes you feel extremely overwhelmed. Like most people, I love to save money on things I am going to buy anyway, and I love to save money on things I don't necessarily need but would love to have. Ha.

But when all the sales happen at the same time (like right NOW), I can feel myself panic:

What was it that I was going to buy from this retailer?
Is that a good deal? Will the discount increase?
What gift was I going to buy this person again?
Oh, that would be a great gift idea for so-and-so!
OMG, this is such a good deal so I better jump on it.

And on and on. My brain goes into overdrive trying to keep track of all of the sales, what's on my list, and what's worth buying and what isn't.

If you don't want to feel like that, here are my best tips for a smoother, less frantic, and more thoughtful holiday sale season. I first shared these tips with my email subscribers last week but felt like they needed a more permanent home here on the blog! (Sign up in the sidebar to receive a once-weekly roundup of new blog posts, the best sales, and other exclusive content!)

When I'm good about following these tips, I feel much calmer when it comes to tackling the holiday sales. The operative phrase being “when I’m good about following these tips” LOL.

Best Tips for Tackling Holiday Sale Season

  • The notes app on your phone, or even a small notebook you can keep with you at all times, is a game changer. Write down literally every single time you think of something you plan to buy, whether that be something for yourself or a gift for someone else. I WILL forget things if I don't write them down. Be specific about the item and retailers you can buy it from, and include a link if you have one. Refer to this list often.

  • If you feel like you want to buy all the things because the deals are so good (trust me, I'm right there with you), also make note of your budget, and prioritize your purchases accordingly. Remember: it’s not a good deal if it’s not something you would’ve bought anyway, and if you spend $100 more than your budget of $200, even though you got a good deal, you still spent $100 more than you meant to.

  • Immediately delete promotional emails that are either too tempting or that you're not planning on taking advantage of. It's not worth cluttering up your inbox or your brain.

  • “Star” or save the emails with the sales you're planning on shopping to keep them organized. Alternatively, write down sale details (retailer, discount, length of sale/end date, exclusions, etc.) in a note on your phone so you can see them all in one place.

  • If you want to take advantage of a sale but aren't sure if it's the best deal, or if you're wondering if a particular retailer will do a sale, do a quick Google search for “[Insert Retailer] Black Friday/Cyber Monday 2020” to get an idea of what their sales were a year ago and what you might expect to come in the next week or so.

I hope these tips help you out! What are you shopping for this season?
