I think I say this every year, but I truly can’t believe I lived without linen for the majority of my life. I didn’t really “discover” linen until I started following blogs a few years ago. All I knew about linen up until then was that’s what the closet filled with extra towels and bedsheets in my childhood home was called. I knew nothing about the actual fabric that one can wear, especially on hot summer days. How did I ever survive summers without it? Up next on my linen wish list: linen sheets. They sound dreamy!

It’s only natural for me to wear head to toe linen as an ode to my favorite summer fabric. Though, technically, both the top and the pants are linen blends (the pants are cotton-linen). This loose-on-top and loose-on-bottom silhouette is not one I normally go for, but it adds to the relaxed, imperfect feel of the fabric. And yes, linen wrinkles a ton—you learn to embrace it! :) I picked the navy pants specifically to conceal wrinkles, so if linen is something you want to try but aren’t sure about the wrinkles, start with a darker color first.

Catch me later this summer (when it’s 100°F, bleh) repeating this outfit and pairing these pants with all of the other linen tees and shirts in my closet. Can’t stop, won’t stop. ;)

Here’s a little work outfit inspiration to kick off the short work week! I wore this look for the training I planned and attended a few weeks ago. I wanted to wear an outfit that combined professionalism and comfort (but leaned heavily towards comfort). These pants fit the bill with their comfort and ease, and I added the blazer and pumps to take the pants up a notch. I actually wore almost this exact outfit for my job interview a couple of years ago; I didn’t yet own these pants so I wore a different pair of pants (an old pair of true work pants that barely fit since I got them during my college years, ha).

As much as I love and feel like myself when I wear neutrals, it’s fun for me to break up the same-ol’ neutral work outfits with a punch of color like this top. I still felt very “me” in this outfit! I find myself drawn to wearing bright(er) colors when I want a bit of a confidence boost, especially when it comes to work because impostor syndrome is real and it doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to go away. Also, I like bringing out my stereotypical feminine side when I show off my work (i.e., master’s defense in a polka dot dress, dissertation proposal defense in a tulle skirt, job interview and hosting a training in this top) because it almost feels rebellious against the patriarchy. It’s my way of saying, “Yes, I can dress feminine and be taken seriously as a scientist at the same time. What about it?”

Now I want to know: Do you feel the same way when it comes to wearing bright colors vs. neutrals in an academic or work environment?

I put together this outfit one morning before work, looked it over in the mirror before heading out, and then we took pictures after work…and it turns out I’m not super crazy about it after looking at it in pictures. Ha. I knew in my mind that I wanted to wear this new-to-me skirt with my slide sandals, and even though I liked the combination when I looked in the mirror, I don’t love how it looks in these photos. I feel like the sandals are covering too much of my feet? As it turns out, I think I prefer to wear them with pants or jeans.

I found myself browsing the selection at LOFT in person last month and this striped midi skirt caught my eye, so I immediately made a mental note (and took a photo) so I could order it during the next 50% off sale. I ordered it in a size 0, which is my normal size in other brands but sometimes is too big in LOFT (I don’t understand?!), and this skirt is slightly loose at my natural waist. (It’s great if I want to eat a big meal, haha.) I love the button front, and it does have pockets! I didn’t end up putting my hands in them much during this shoot for some unknown reason. I didn’t realize this skirt came in petite after I had ordered (which now looks to be sold out), but I wonder if that would have fit better in the waist. I don’t mind the regular length at all; it’s perfect for work!

Our days of glorious summer-like temperatures seem to be over for now and it’s back to chilly rain! Oh, spring. It’ll be nice to have the break before summer rears its head for good.
