Thoughts on "flattering"

When you see an outfit or a garment that you would consider to be “flattering” on the wearer, what does that mean, exactly? Is the garment pleasing to the eye, or does it make the wearer more pleasing to the eye? According to the dictionary, flattering means to enhance one’s appearance. Who gets to decide what is and what isn’t flattering when it comes to clothing choice? Is it the person who chooses to wear a particular garment, or is it the people the wearer comes across during their daily life?

I often find myself struggling when it comes to trying new silhouettes, including wide leg pants, because I don’t consider them to be conventionally flattering like other pant silhouettes. I dipped my toes in the trend earlier this summer when I bought these chambray pants from J.Crew Factory. I always admired Everlane’s wide leg cropped pants from afar and especially the women wearing those pants on social media, but I never thought I would wear them myself. I didn’t think they would be flattering on me. (I even had a reader DM me on Instagram, telling me I needed to try them for myself.)

I couldn’t stop thinking about them months later, and when the short inseam was released, I knew I had to at least give them a shot. (This color sold out when they were released, but I think they got a few returns which is how I was able to snag a pair recently.) I put them on and didn’t take them off the rest of the night. Seriously—one of the most comfortable pairs of pants I own! That said, I wasn’t crazy about what I saw in the mirror. I’m not used to seeing my legs hidden; I’m used to seeing them being hugged by skinny jeans. They’re also cropped, which is how they’re supposed to look, but I thought: did the crop make me look even shorter than I already am?

I wore them to work the very next day with this outfit here. To keep the rest of the look in my comfort zone, I wore a simple striped tee, black ankle boots for a little height but also a little bit of drama, and my leather jacket for added edge. Even though the pants were new and somewhat nerve-wracking, the other garments in the outfit were old favorites that helped me get through the day without worrying about my outfit.

I still don’t think I’d consider these pants to be flattering on me, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started caring less about buying only items that I would deem to be flattering. At the end of the day, these pants are comfortable as hell, and that’s way more important to me right now. ;)

Happy October! I’m trying not to think about the fact that we only have three months left of 2018… This time of year always seems to fly by since there is so much going on with activities and holidays. I’m trying to focus on enjoying fall rather than trying to do too much. That said, we have talked about checking out a local apple orchard and carving pumpkins at some point this month! Do you have any fun activities planned?

In addition to the cooler weather that comes with the end of September/beginning of October, the color palette of this outfit has put me in quite the fall mood. Who knew I’d be such a fan of burgundy and rust together?! This outfit kind of happened by accident. I was planning outfits and pulled out this skirt since it’s the perfect color for fall. I was originally thinking I’d wear my black cropped sweater with it, but it felt too voluminous, so I threw on my burgundy cropped sweater and ended up loving the result. The combination feels bold but not too over-the-top.

Even though my Ferragamo ‘Vara’ pumps are one of my “nicer” pairs of shoes that I tend to save for special occasions, I pulled them out for this look to keep the look light but still grounded. I tried this on with ankle boots and with my black oxfords, too, but those pairs both seemed too clunky. I added the necklace to go with the hint of gold in the shoes. I will definitely be keeping this outfit in mind for future cool (but not cold—bare legs, you know) fall days!

5 years of blogging (+ a special surprise for YOU!)

5 year blogging anniversary — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

It’s hard for me to believe, but I’ve been doing this blogging thing for FIVE YEARS now. In some ways, it feels like I’ve been doing this forever, and in other ways, it feels like I’m still brand new at it!

My blog has undergone a lot of change over the past few years—of course, it has grown and evolved as my life has evolved. My blog started as Twenty-Something Simple on a free Wordpress blog in late September 2013. Then, in 2015, I attended a blogging conference and was inspired to rebrand and switch to Squarespace. That’s when Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair was born!

I’ve always written about my personal style. I first fell in love with style blogs, so that’s always what my main focus has been, and it’s interesting to look back at those first outfits and see how much my style has changed over the past few years. I truly think I would not put that much effort into what I wear each day if I didn’t have this blog!

I have also enjoyed keeping track of my clothing budget and sharing my travels and other bits of my life. As much as I want to share more of my life than I currently do, my life is just…not that interesting, lol. When anything remotely interesting happens, you’re the first to hear about it. ;) Regardless, I hope you are still able to get a feel for how I am in real life and what my story is.

I appreciate you so much for reading, for commenting, for pinning, for sharing my posts/blog, for following along on social media all these years. I would not have had some of the opportunities I’ve had if it weren’t for you, so thank you! (I also appreciate it because it doesn’t feel like I’m shouting into a void every time I post something new.)

As my way of thanking you for everything you’ve done for me, I’ve decided to put together something special…

The prize features a few of my favorite things as well as an item generously gifted by one of the lovely brands I’ve had the pleasure of working with (you probably know the one I’m talking about!). You’ll find all the details on the prize and how to enter below!

One winner will receive everything here:

Please note that the prizes above are only available to a reader located in the U.S. This giveaway is open to international readers, but the prize(s) will be different if an international reader wins, and I will discuss options directly with the winner if that happens.

  3. Tell me something about yourself!

As a bonus, if you enter the giveaway and have commented on any of my posts in the past (since my blog became Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair and started using Disqus for comments), I will count one extra entry for each comment you left on a previous post. For example, if you enter the giveaway and have commented five times on previous posts, you will receive six entries. I will only count the comments made on prior posts up until this post goes live, so comments made on older posts during the course of the giveaway do not count as extra entries. I appreciate every single one of you for reading, but I wanted to extend a special thank you to those of you that have been interacting with me over the years! :)

I plan to select and contact the winner that Saturday. The winner will need to provide me with a valid mailing address in order for me to mail the prizes.

THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED. Thank you for entering! <3
