Here's my second graduation outfit! The day after commencement was my college's convocation ceremony. During convocation, there are a few short speeches, and then each person walks across the stage to "receive" their degree (and get hooded if they are a master's or PhD candidate). It doesn't seem like it would take that long except each person has a short bio that is read. Luckily, I've always been one of the first people across (I think only one or two PhD candidates walked when I received my master's two years ago), so then I get to enjoy the rest of the ceremony. It amazed me how many bachelor's candidates already had jobs lined up! Guess I should have gone into engineering, ha.

Anyway, outfit time! I declared on Instagram a few weeks ago that I'd be wearing these sandals. I had trouble picking out what top/skirt or dress to wear with them, though... And I couldn't get this dress out of my head even though it was listed on my Poshmark closet at the time. Thank goodness it didn't sell or I'm not sure what I would have ended up wearing! You may remember that I wore this dress on my last first day of school, so it was fun to bring it full circle and wear it to graduation (even though I'm not technically done with school quite yet, haha). I loved how this outfit contrasted the black look I wore for commencement the day before. I'm so happy the weather was warm enough for dresses!

Now all that's left is to defend my dissertation in a couple of weeks! Wish me luck! I'm already nervous about that part...

What to wear to graduate school graduation — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

I can't believe I just had my third and final academic graduation last week (well, fourth if you count high school and fifth if you count kindergarten, haha). Where has the time gone?! I'll admit that it felt a bit strange to walk before being officially done with my PhD; I defend my dissertation in a couple of weeks. All of my friends and family saw the photo proof of my graduation so I guess I need to finish now, haha! No quitting allowed. ;)

At my university, graduation is split into two parts: a main commencement ceremony and your college convocation. Commencement is the formal university-wide event with speeches and honorary degrees and such, and convocation is when everyone walks to receive their degree (of course, no one actually receives their real degree at convocation; it's mailed once grades are finalized and any outstanding fees are paid, haha).

Since my commencement and convocation were on two separate days, that meant I had two different graduation outfits to wear! The look I'm sharing today is what I wore for my department's awards banquet luncheon and for the evening commencement ceremony (plus a fancy dinner with my family after commencement). I knew I wanted to wear my new Ferragamo 'Vara' pumps, and I kept the look simple with a little black silk dress and statement earrings. I added the cardigan for warmth indoors; it was so nice outside and I didn't even need to wear it for commencement! I bought the Madewell clutch last fall for a wedding, and it's my new favorite for formal events. I can fit all the necessities (ID/cards, car key, phone, lip balm) with very little bulging, plus I love how it's understated. And, since I needed to have my hair down for the grad ceremonies, I straightened my hair for the first time in forever!

We've had some absolutely gorgeous and warm spring weather lately, thank goodness! It's been fun to pull out my favorite warm-weather pieces, like this navy silk shell I bought from Grana last year. I paired it again with white; I just can't stop (/won't stop) wearing navy and white combinations! It's one of my favorites. I finished the look with my sweet 'Kitty' flats to go with the top and my rust-colored floppy hat (a fall favorite) to bring in a bit more color.

I love outfits like this that are perfect for working at school during the day but don't need any alterations before a fun evening out and about! I don't know about you, but I don't like to change my outfit multiple times a day unless I need to for specific activities (i.e. working out or hiking). When I get dressed for the day, I think about everything going on that day and put together an outfit that will work for everything. The only exceptions I make are for a change in formality or a change in the weather (i.e. sudden wind, heat, or cold). I get the feeling that a lot of bloggers I follow change clothes a lot (they say they wear many things multiple times a week and it's just not possible unless they are changing multiple times a a day, haha...).

What about you? Do you change clothes multiple times a day depending on that day's events?
